THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Didrick Zaharias was a phenomenal athlete. This Texan ran, jumped, rode horses, and played basketball and baseball with tremendous flair.

In the Olympic tryouts in 1932, she won five first places in track and field events. In the games of that year in Los Angeles , she won a gold medal in the women's 80 meter hurdles, a gold medal in the javelin throw, and a silver medal in the high jump.

After the Olympics, Zaharias turned to golf. Although she started from scratch, she won the National Women's Amateur and the British Women's Amateur.

The press hailed her as a 'natural athlete.’ They often referred to her as an 'automatic champion.' What they failed to acknowledge is her diligence and discipline, and her consistency and hard work.

Success is not an accident. People don't just wake up one day and find out they are successful without taking some deliberate actions to reach the top. One can only fail by accident. Champions take some actions which make them great.

Who is a champion? A champion is someone who has blazed a trail in an industry. Becoming a champion can also mean different things to people. It might be to become a successful athlete, businessperson, writer, author, comedian, fashion designer, footballer or a successful musician.

Every champion started somewhere. If it is your dream to be a champion, you may take time out to read and understand this article, and take action based on the information you get. Remember that every destination you have arrived at started with one step in the right direction.

Champions train for success. Every athlete knows the importance of training. It is during the trainings that they learn the skills they need to succeed on field. The level of your training may determine your achievement.

Prepare yourself for the journey. Your preparation determines your performance. When a soldier wants to go to war, he usually prepares himself physically, emotionally, mentally and financially. It is important to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to get the requisite knowledge to succeed in your personal life. You can also enroll for some online programs.

Champions learn the ropes. Learning the nitty-gritty of your chosen craft will make you become an authority. Footballers employ the professional service of a coach to help them develop, harness, and coordinate their skills.

You may need a life coach. My job as a life coach is to help my clients to achieve their dreams, desires and aspirations, help them clarify their mission, purpose and goals, and help them achieve that outcome.

Champions do not quit. In a recent match where Nigeria played against Mozambique , when all hope was lost, the Nigerian footballer, Nsofor, scored and made Nigeria win that match at the eight-seventh minute. Nigeria won that match because they didn't throw in the towel. No matter how challenging the journey to success may be, if you don't quit, you will win.

Champions learn from failure. Every champion knows that defeat is not final. It does not matter if your business failed or if your boss sacked you. It does not matter if the relationship you groomed for years failed. It does not matter if you lost some money due to the economic crunch. You can learn from your failures.

Failure does not make you a failure. There may be no successful artiste or business person that had never failed. Champions know that failure is only an event, and not a person. Anytime you fail in something, you learn an approach that does not work. Failure teach you how not to do things.

Champions are consistent. When you learn to keep developing your skill all the time without being distracted, you have what it takes to become a champion. Champions dedicate a lot of hours to perfect their skill. That's why they are unbeatable.

Champions are passionate. If you know anybody that is successful at what he or she does, most times, they are passionate about what they do. Let your passion be a compass that directs you in deciding what to do, and what not to do. Do more of the things that make you happy on a daily basis.

Champions set goals. Every champion knows the importance of setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound. They know what they what exactly they want to achieve on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. They measure their level of success and failure. They are realistic about what they want to achieve without painting a larger than life picture of their goals and they set deadline.

Champions are action oriented. What differentiates people is not what they think, but what they do. It is not enough to dream. It is not enough to be passionate. It is not enough to plan. You have to act now. Learn to strike when the iron is hot.
