ASBESTOS DEADLY DISEASE IN HOMES

Prior to 1980, a number of building products used in construction materials contained asbestos. These products included flooring, ceilings, insulation and drywall, all products that the general public has had exposure to for years. If these materials are in good shape and are left undisturbed, however, they don’t present a health hazard. The risk comes into play when the asbestos fibers become airborne and are breathed into the lungs. Over time these fibers may cause scarring and inflammation that can lead to mesothelioma or asbestosis.

Before undertaking any home renovation projects on older homes, the homeowner should contact a professional asbestos abatement company to determine whether asbestos is present. Products can be tested for asbestos by a sample analysis, typically done in a lab setting. If the material tests positive, the company can be contracted to extract the asbestos (using special equipment designed to minimize the risk), or to encapsulate the asbestos so that the fibers cannot become airborne. Each asbestos worker is required to complete a certification process and is aware of the dangers. This is not something homeowners should attempt on their own.

Unfortunately, some homeowners will ignore the health risks not realizing they are putting their health in jeopardy for years to come. It can take up to several decades after exposure to asbestos for symptoms of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases to become present. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported that asbestos is a human carcinogen. It further states that there is no safe level of exposure of asbestos.

Families living in homes built prior to 1980 owe it to themselves to have their homes checked for the presence of asbestos, before undertaking any home improvement efforts. The cost should not be a deterrent considering this can be a life threatening situation for both you and your family.
